Ravages of Computer Aging

After nearly four years, the power adapter on my Powerbook has finally given out. For quite a while I've had to twist it around to get it to light up. And now it lights up no more. I should feel lucky, as a lot of people have experienced failures much sooner and more often. But it still sucks to not be able to use my laptop even if there's nothing at all wrong with the laptop itself.

That isn't quite true though. Another recent development was that the laptop would no longer stay closed by itself. Something must have happened to the little hook that comes down, but I couldn't even see what it might be, let alone try to fix it. So instead I have to put a weight on top of it to get the computer to remain closed and asleep. There's something terribly undignified about it, very reminiscent of old age in humans.

mine lasted 4 years too basically - then the monitor came partly unhinged, battery wore out, and the CD-ROM was no longer so hot. the light did go out of my power cord, but it still works. i gave it to my parents and they still use it. stlll, it took two graduate degrees-worth of a beating, so i was overall immensely satisfied with it.

i bought a fancy new macbook pro a year ago, but then took a job where im not allowed to use a laptop, so that was kinda overkill.

Yeah, I can't use mine for work any more either, but I've gotten so used to the Powerbook that when the time comes for a replacement I probably will have to get a Pro.

Mine has a CD-ROM issue as well: the case is bent where the slot is, making the slot narrower. I can always get a disc in, but I've sometimes had to bend it back with pliers to get the disc to come out. That part of the case is of course where my right wrist lays while typing.

basically, i wasnt about to give up the 15 inch screen, and the contemporary ones are about 15.5 inches.

As for the CD-ROM, besides the fact that it made disturbing noises, it was making errors in writing CDs.
